My week in Istanbul: we are all good people

janvier 11, 2017

When I set to go to Istanbul and present the 31rst session of VIDEO FOREVER in the city, my friends told me to be careful… Sure will. I tried hard not to fall in the snow.

The Art Department (owner Gamze Buyukkusoglu and director Sena Arcak Bagcilar) had invited us – the VIDEO FOREVER team – to present a session on LOVE STORIES at Soho House. It was gorgeous, people attended despite the snow, the place is magical, we showed, among many videos from international artists (for more details see here): Winter Sleep – mandatory –, House of Letters by Turkish artist Ali Kazma – the love for books –, and a mysterious film by Turkish artist Merve Kaptan  that had been suggested to us by Kiah Reading, a former resident of The Art Department. On Merve’s web site it says:

we are all good people. we are all good people. we are all good people.

And here is what Kiah Reading said about Merve Kaptan’s video: Merve’s video at once speaks of our world where both the lightness that arises from situations such as love mis-haps, and the extremes such as public violence are equally present scenarios… There is just pain, laughter, questions, unknowing & interest, and the video reminds us that these things exist all together in our world. More than this, perhaps it … is asking for a co-existence between ‘others’ that is at the moment in collapse.

Merve lives in Kadiköy, I will do a studio visit with her tomorrow. She also created Torna, a project space and a bookshop for artists’ books. Her video also says that INVITATION IS IRRELEVANT…

This morning I visited OPERATION ROOM: the first exhibition space to be opened in a hospital in Turkey. Fantastic initiative. Great space – and the art is also invading the whole American Hospital. The director/curator of OPERATION ROOM, Ilgın Deniz Akseloğlu, combines subtlety and efficiency. Would love to do a show here and with her – would be my first in a hospital – for an MD would be about time to do so! And we discussed Le poids des choses

I visited Haldun Dostoglu in Galeri Nev on Istiklal, most respectable gallery founded in 1984, in Istanbul since 1987, showing, among others Ali Kazma. Next opening this Friday, with the Greek artist Maro Michalakakos: “The Doors of Perception” is the tile of the exhibition, let’s open them wide – and if you are in Istanbul please attend the opening!

we are all good people. we are all good people. we are all good people.

I went all the way to Sabanci University, visit my friend multi-awarded professor Ozge Akbulut. The campus was enshroud in snow, but studying and work went on, whatever happened outside, in the gorgeous library that gives any book lover the will to stay here forever…

we are all good people. we are all good people. we are all good people.

And the rest of my time I spend at Simdi Café – beautiful place, good food, wonderful Shiraz, internet what else do you need – working and meeting with friends from here and elsewhere.
